On Autism Awareness Day, we honour the beautifully different ways children with autism experience the world — and the gentle support that helps them feel more regulated, safe, and at home in their bodies.

For many autistic children, the world is loud, fast, and unpredictable — and their own body can feel just as overwhelming. Behaviours like toe-walking, mouthing, spinning, and hand-flapping are not purposeless — they’re self-regulation tools or expressions of internal discomfort.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch therapy that that works directly with the nervous system to support regulation. It’s often used alongside traditional therapies — or as a first step when a child is too dysregulated for structured intervention. For children who are highly dysregulated or overwhelmed, CST can help them reach a baseline of regulation that makes other therapies more accessible.

Some changes we may see over time include:
• Less sensory-seeking (spinning, mouthing, toe-walking)
• More ability to sit, engage, or accept touch
• An overall calming effect

It’s not about fixing. It’s about supporting regulation so a child can begin to feel safe enough to connect — and from there, communicate, explore, and grow.

❌ Feeds are taking longer than expected or feel effortful?
❌ Baby is spitting up often, struggling with reflux, or seems unsettled?
❌ You’re second-guessing whether feeding should feel easier?

Weight gain alone doesn’t mean feeding is going well. Just because your baby isn’t screaming through feeds or you’re managing to get some sleep doesn’t mean there aren’t issues worth addressing.

When feeding isn’t efficient, it affects more than just milk intake:
👶🏻 For baby: Feeding dysfunction can mean baby is working harder than they should, expending too much energy to eat, compensating with poor oral habits, or silently struggling with reflux or airway issues.

This year, I had the privilege of supporting 70+ families 1:1 on their unique journeys. This year, I had the privilege of supporting 70+ families 1:1 on their unique journeys. From prenatal breastfeeding counseling, overcoming latching difficulties, managing milk supply challenges, starting solids, and tackling picky eating to providing Craniosacral Therapy and Feeding Therapy—it has been a year of incredible growth and transformation.

Big wins this year included:

If your baby seems uncomfortable, arches their back, wakes frequently, fusses during feedings or the rest mentioned—it could be reflux, even without visible spit-up.

Silent reflux occurs when stomach contents move up the esophagus but don’t result in spitting up. Instead, the acid irritates the lining of the esophagus, which can be harder to diagnose because reflux isn’t always visible.

While silent reflux is often linked to an immature digestive system, physical tension from birth—such as a long labour or C-section—can make the issue worse. Tension in areas like the diaphragm, esophagus, and abdomen can make it harder for your baby to keep milk down comfortably.

Many assume babies will “outgrow” reflux, but leaving it untreated can allow the underlying issue—whether from physical tension or digestive immaturity—to persist, often showing up as refusal of feeds, short feeds, or for older children, picky eating and grazing as the child grows. They rightly make the connection between eating and discomfort.

Untreated reflux can also lead to more serious conditions like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), a chronic and more severe form of reflux that can cause additional symptoms and long-term discomfort.

It’s Black Breastfeeding Week. But why such a thing?

Because the history many don’t know—and some avoid because it’s painful—shows us why it’s so important.

During slavery, Black mothers were often forced to serve as “wet nurses,” breastfeeding the children of others while their own babies were left without. This trauma has left a deep imprint on our communities. The quote “I wish I dried up” comes from a poem by Hess Love, which seeks to represent the thoughts of Black mothers who were forced to feed babies that weren’t their own.

Over time, including in Jamaica, formula became more accessible and was marketed as a sign of wealth and progress. For many, being able to afford formula represented a step away from poverty, leading to a cultural shift where breastfeeding was seen as something for those who couldn’t afford formula.

Today, formula companies continue to target Black mothers and developing countries like Jamaica with aggressive marketing, which can sometimes overshadow the benefits of breastfeeding. This isn’t about bashing formula—there are many reasons why families formula feed. But it’s crucial to recognise the historical and economic forces that have shaped our attitudes toward breastfeeding.

Black Breastfeeding Week is a celebration of Black breastfeeding mothers breaking free from these forces; it’s about reclaiming the space where history and modern-day challenges are deeply intertwined, and creating a future where Black mothers and their babies can thrive.
