Myofunctional Therapy

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a specialised therapeutic approach designed to correct dysfunctions of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. A comprehensive OMT program typically consists of 12 sessions, scheduled bi-weekly, though the exact duration may vary based on the severity of the orofacial myofunctional disorders and the patient's commitment to the therapy.
Application of Myofunctional Therapy:
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy can support children experiencing:
-
Feeding Issues: Challenges with chewing various textures, picky eating behaviours, gagging, or prolonged mealtimes.
-
Speech Development: Improving articulation issues, such as difficulty with certain sounds, by correcting tongue placement and muscle function.
-
Breathing and Sleep: Encouraging nasal breathing over mouth breathing, which can lead to better oxygenation, sleep quality, and overall health.
-
Swallowing Patterns: Correcting improper swallowing techniques, such as tongue thrusting, to ensure efficient and safe swallowing.
-
Pre- and Post-Frenectomy Therapy: Preparing the oral muscles for a tongue-tie release to optimise function before the procedure (prehab) and ensuring proper healing, mobility, and function after release (posthab).
-
Dental Alignment: Assisting in the prevention and correction of malocclusions, including open bites, by guiding proper oral muscle function.
